Lucas County Approves 1.37 Mil Jail Levy for November Ballot

The Lucas County Commissioners have given their go-ahead for a levy that will fund the construction of a new jail to appear on the November ballot. The ballot measure now must be finalized by the Lucas County Board of Elections.

The 1.37 mil levy will fund the construction of the new jail, estimated at around $155 million. That project includes a new behavioral health solutions center, estimated at around $18 million. The proposed site on N. Detroit avenue has been cause for concern for area residents, who have begun a campaign to rehabilitate the current prison in downtown Toledo.

If approved, the levy would cost the owner of a $100,000 home around $48/year in increased taxes, and would last for 37 years.

Commissioners also gave their approval to two renewal levies to appear on the November ballot. One levy funds Lucas County Children Services, while the other pays for the mental health and recovery services board.
