(Bowling Green, OH) Continued school safety incidents are prompting discussions across Northwest Ohio on what to do.
Bowling Green police and school leaders will talk school security this evening during a public forum. B-G's police chief and school superintendent plan to discuss all aspects of safety in schools, then allow the public to ask questions. The Public forum will be held at the Wood County District Public Library Atrium starting at 7 p.m.
A former Toledo police detective is now the chief of security at Toledo Public Schools. Diana Ruiz-Krause spent 34 years at TPD before starting her new role Wednesday. Her new role will be to beef up security and training at all TPS schools, including active shooter training and other simulated scenarios. Ruiz-Krause is a TPS graduate and went to the University of Toledo.
A 17-year old charter school student faces a detention hearing today, after Oregon police say he brought an air soft gun to the Eagle Learning Center. According to police, the male student hid the gun in a laundromat next to the school after showing it off to his classmates. The school went on lockdown for part of the day as a result. The teen faces a felony and two misdemeanors.
Monroe police say a middle school student will face charges for bringing a grenade to school. Officers arrested the teenager Wednesday after he showed the device to classmates and threatened to blow up the school. Police say the grenade had been decommissioned and didn't pose a threat to anyone.
