Sylvania School Board Braces for Criticism

(Sylvania, OH) The Sylvania school board may get an earful from angry taxpayers tonight.

A group calling itself "The Committee to Fight Unfair Taxes" plans to send a loud message tonight to the Sylvania board of education over the district's sudden increase in contesting property values.

Some homeowners complain their real estate taxes increased with a new levy passed last November, only to have the school board contest their home values-- which could add even more to their property tax bill.

The number of contested cases in the Sylvania school district rose from 45 in 2015 to more than 250 last year, despite a request from the Lucas County auditor to stop the practice because property values will be updated in 2018.
