Commissioners Unveil Proposed Jail Site

(Toledo, OH) The site of a proposed Lucas County jail is now known.

Lucas County commissioners unveiled a 30-acre site for a new county lock-up Wednesday along Angola Road that's mostly farmland and greenspace. But the property is located close to one of the city's busiest intersections-- Airport Highway and Byrne Road.

Commissioners paid $350,000, or about $13,000 per acre for the future jail property. A new 650-bed jail would be funded by a new property tax levy approved by commissioners for the November ballot, which would collect $145 million over the next three decades for construction and operations.

Commissioners say such a site is needed as a corrections center to respond to the opioid epidemic and meet community safety needs.
