Medicaid Showdown Possible as Ohio House Meets

(Columbus, OH) The Ohio House meets in special session this morning and may override the governor's budget veto of a proposed Medicaid expansion freeze.

House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger says GOP legislative leaders caucused last night to see if the votes were there to reinstate the Medicaid enrollment moratorium. Hundreds of people rallied outside the Ohio Statehouse Wednesday, urging state lawmakers to leave the governor's veto intact.

Republican lawmakers and the GOP Governor John Kasich are at odds over the plan, as state legislators attempt to balance the two-year spending plan in the face of a budget deficit and shrinking tax revenues. The Kasich administration estimates 500,000 low-income adults would lose coverage within the first 18 months of the freeze.

The House needs 60 votes today to override the governor, with 66 Republicans in that chamber.
